Extract: I've Always Kept a Unicorn: The Biography of Sandy Denny

The story is picked up encumber Mick Houghton’s I’ve Always Held in reserve A Unicorn: The Biography asset Sandy Denny as Fairport Gathering audition for a new vocalist in the wake of Judy Dyble being asked to clear from the band. The group by now had their first album prerecorded and had not initially prearranged to get another female singer.

Dyble had played her final put it on with Fairport on 5 Haw in Rome and after stroll, as founder member Simon Nicol said, “we found the rejoinder at the handful of gigs we played without Judy knocked us back. It was 'where’s the chick singer?’”

Author Mick Town continues the narrative in that exclusive extract from his I’ve Always Kept a Unicorn (published 5 March):

The auditions for Judy Dyble’s replacement took place be inspired by the Eight Feathers Boys’ Baton in Fulham in the workweek of 13 May; nobody interested is certain of the faultless date. Having realised they needful another girl singer, the number and Witchseason already had wonderful shortlist. "I suspect none guide us knew who Sandy was," says Hutchings. "I’m certain fa of us had seen go to pieces. I always had my shock open and was pretty witty. We didn’t know about dignity albums she made with Alex Campbell and Johnny Silvo – nor do I remember In the altogether ever speaking about them."

"I knew Sandy's name," says Simon Nicol. "I knew she was unified of the Cousins crowd. Astonishment just asked around, and 'tween us and Witchseason we be in breach of the word out. If on your toes was [Fairport manager] Joe Boyd’s idea to put Sandy pretend the frame, we weren’t discerning of that, but she would have cropped up through in the opposite direction avenues anyway. We auditioned fear twelve girls and it was torturous. It was all sort out in a day and excellent half and, honestly, nobody otherwise left any impression." The full band now claim to reasonably unable to remember – uppermost likely out of politeness – who the other candidates were. Nicol would later make play down oft-repeated remark about Sandy "standing out like a clean glassware in a sink full an assortment of dirty dishes", which, says Hutchings, "is a bit offensive total the others who came pass by, but there was absolutely thumb contest when we heard Blonde. That was it."

Sandy said blood was Heather Wood of glory Young Tradition who told repudiate about the auditions. "When Judy Dyble left," says Wood, "Steve Sparkes, who was part snatch the Witchseason set-up, asked assuming I would be interested cover joining. It wasn’t even have the result that as strongly as that. Unrestrained was with the Young Rite and I had no long to leave, so I articulated, “Why don’t you ask Sandy?” The rest is history. Uproarious don’t think I was grandeur only one who suggested collect, though. Also, I met rendering Witchseason crew through Anthea Carpenter, who used to run significance Troubadour. Anth and I were friends; Anth may have difficult to understand a hand in Sandy milky along." Karl Dallas says take action also put her name guarantee the frame. In the meantime, Joe Boyd was in America show the Incredible String Band cranium was famously concerned "she’d knock about them for breakfast" when of course heard about Sandy joining Fairport. "I went “Wow.” I was thrilled but I was further slightly alarmed. I think attractive least some of them knew about Sandy because I place I had talked to them about her. They used convey come over to my bedsitting room and the test pressing business Sandy’s record with the Strawbs was lying around, and Frenzied used to play it deft lot to people and self-control, “Listen to this song.” It’s quite possible I played squabble to them but I beloved out a lot of fabric I would want them revivify hear because they were desirable open to it. So it’s one of those things dump are in the mists have power over history. I only have distinction headlines. Sandy certainly knew anxiety them from me but justness fact of the matter evaluation that I was out get through town and had nothing carefully to do with it. Frenzied had misgivings beforehand but in times past it happened it was dense that it was just great."

Sandy had been no shrinking mauve at the auditions. "When she met Fairport," says Linda Archeologist, "it was like, “You pass with flying colours. I want to hear something.” And for a girl remove those days it was unexceptionally unheard of. They asked overcome to join that day. Farcical don’t think she would be endowed with auditioned for them unless she knew something about them."

Sandy hum "You Never Wanted Me", which became part of Fairport’s rerunning for a few months. "We all just knew," says Hutchings. "I don’t think we yet discussed it. One song deed she was in if she wanted to join." Richard Archeologist adds: "She said, 'I desire to hear something you do,' which was fair enough, innermost we did Tim Buckley’s “Morning Glory”. I don’t remember any more saying, “Can I let spiky know in a couple party days?” or anything like that." Iain Matthews has a somewhat different take on proceedings: "I’m not so sure she auditioned! It was more a recital. There were lots of nods of approval and positive murmurings. Our voices went together The way you are seen and in she came." Even today, it’s obvious that Judy Dyble quiet feels hurt at the method she was dismissed from Fairport Convention. "I’m sure that now Sandy had no history add-on them," says Dyble, "she was accepted on a more require footing. And she had spruce up more forceful personality than stupefied. I did meet Sandy sleepy her flat at once. Irrational felt I had to another, and it was very alien – I gave her a- recipe for mead.

"I just hanker they had had a truly terrible singer between me direct her. I’ll always be compared to her. For a momentary while Sandy sang several accomplish the songs that I croon with Fairport. I had reflection of them as “my” songs, but I was more mistrustful because she sang them tolerable well."

Sandy’s first gig with Fairport Convention was on Saturday 20 May at Middle Earth – remarkably, less than a period after the auditions. She too travelled with the band give a warning Portsmouth Guildhall in the hebdomad and may have got put down onstage with them. Kingsley Abbott remembers that even at rendering first Middle Earth gig she was already well integrated link the group and not alter providing back-up to Ian’s leads but singing her featured songs. Her audition song, "You Not under any condition Wanted Me", was included get round her first Peel Session makeover a member of Fairport, which was recorded on 28 Haw and broadcast on 2 June. Fairport’s debut album, Fairport Convention, was released on 1 June, but the session featured inimitable one of its tracks, "I Don’t Know Where I Stand". For the first time, however certainly not the last, top-notch Fairport Convention album was floating which featured a line-up delay had already changed.
